Acton Toyota Scholarship

Eleanor (Ella) Harvey of Littleton High School is the proud recipient of a $5,000 charitable scholarship donation from Acton Toyota of Littleton.

Acton Toyota of Littleton, in conjunction with Toyota Motor Sales USA, sought to reward a deserving graduating high school senior student who has been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college or university.  The students were asked to write an essay documenting their own achievements in Science/Mathematics, Technology, or Environmental Studies.

The dealership received nearly 30 impressive essays from the senior students of the eligible local area high schools.  However, Ella and her accomplishments made her the clear favorite.  "We couldn't be happier to name Ella as the recipient of this scholarship.  It's very gratifying for us to reward her for her environmental contributions and philanthropy with this donation," comments Mike Hills, General Manager of Acton Toyota.

A ferocious reader of everything "green," Ella possesses a heightened environmental consciousness that has driven her to grow all her own produce in her garden as well as create yogurt, cheese, and butter from the milk of the two goats she purchased last year.  Both are Ella's way to reduce her family's contribution to the wasteful processing, packaging, and transportation of the food industry.  At her high school, Ella took an underutilized greenhouse and used it to create a working barrelponics system that provides the students fresh organic produce for the salad bar in the school's cafeteria.  Moreover, Ella raised nearly $2,000 for Haitian Relief through her initiatives at school and on the Internet.

It is worth noting Acton Toyota was highly impressed by a personal recommendation attached to Ella's application.  The personal recommendation written by Jan Nolan, LHS School Counselor, includes the following remark.  "[Ella] is that rare student who graces the halls of a secondary school only once every five to ten years."

Next year, Ella will attend Victoria College, part of the University of Toronto, where she will concentrate on Public Health, Human Biology, and French.

Ella was recognized by Acton Toyota of Littleton on Sunday, May 15th at Kimball Farm in Westford, MA.  There, an audience of close to 200 people gathered to listen to an educational seminar presented by Wayne Gerdes of cleanMPG.com on how to best increase the fuel efficiency of Toyota hybrid vehicles.
