About the Prius Plug-in:

The Prius Plug-in is similar in concept to the Prius hybrid in the sense both are powered by Toyota's gas-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive.  However, the two vehicles employ different battery packs.

Prius hybrid uses a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that can propel the vehicle solely on electric power for just one mile at 25 mph or less.  It is recharged by the gas online engine, which provides the majority of the vehicle's driving power.

By contrast, Prius Plug-in comes equipped with a larger, higher-capacity lithium-ion battery pack that, under certain conditions, has the power to operate the vehicle in EV Mode at near-freeway speeds for a maximum distance of about 10 to 15 miles.  Once this battery pack is discharged, Prius Plug-in changes to hybrid mode.  This battery pack can also be charged by plugging the vehicle into a 110v outlet for 3 hours or a 220v outlet for 1.5 hours.  In short, Prius Plug-in can use all-electric power for many short trips or hybrid power for longer trips.

The Prius Plug-In @ Acton Toyota of Littleton:

The Toyota Prius Plug-in has twice visited Acton Toyota of Littleton.  The Plug-in first made an appearance this past winter at Acton during an exclusive sneak preview event  for interested Acton Toyota customers.  The Prius Plug-in then returned to Acton Toyota of Littleton this past May for the dealer's The Gerdes School of Hypermiling Event  for its hybrid owners.  As part of the event, Acton Toyota challenged Gerdes to test the limits of a fully charged Toyota Prius Plug-in on its hypermiling rally course.  Believe it or not, Wayne used only .04 gallons, or 5.12 fluid oz., of gasoline to successfully complete the 24.3 mile drive!
